Easter Theatre Festival in second coming

Blantyre is set to play host to two festivals next month and these are Nyasa Music and Easter Theatre festivals.
Organisers of Nyasa Music Festival have already announced that the inaugural event will take place at Kamuzu Stadium from April 19 to 21 2019.
The festival is expected to bring several high-profile artists both local and international and they include South Africa’s AKA.
The Easter Theatre Festival, spearheaded by Solomonic Peacocks, will also be held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre at Mandala a few kilometres from Kamuzu Stadium.
Solomonic Peacocks Director, McArthur Matukuta, said Monday the festival was on and that they had made a tremendous progress in terms of preparations.

“We know that we have another festival but we have different audiences and Easter Theatre Festival is a family festival where father, mother, son and daughter enjoy e activities on the menu,” Matukuta said.

He said they were determined to stay active every year despite being out for four years, saying they have partnered Jacaranda Cultural Centre, Hannover City Council in Germany and Maison de la France.

“At the moment tickets are being sold online on webticket. We will actually be ready with the programme by Wednesday (tomorrow),” Matukuta said.

He said the festival unites those engaged in drama, theatre, dance and poetry in a unique setting.

“The festival is the first of its kind and we are following up on the success of the 2015 edition,” Matukuta said.

Meanwhile, the organisers have released a list of some of the artists set to perform at the festival.They include Solomonic, Young Travellers, Erlebnis from Germany, Dikamawoko and Nkhokwe Arts.
There will also be poetry featuring Yankho Seunda, Sylvester Kalizang’oma, Luckier Chikopa, Yohane Pangani, Frank Naligonje and Raphael Sitima.
The comedy section will feature Tame and McBen and Madalitso Nyambo, with Dikamawoko, Chichiri, Jacaranda and Robert and Joshua featuring in the dance category.

“We also have a drama group from South Africa which will be part of the festival and Vilipanganga Poetry Movement,” he said.

Since 2015, the festival has not taken place due to funding constraints, according to Matukuta.
The festival debuted in 2015, attracting the presence of acts from Zambia including renowned comedians Bikiloni and Difikoti.
